毎年日本では、大手保険会社が赤ちゃんに付ける人気名前ランキングを発表しています。

2018年の人気の名前は男の子1位から蓮（れん）湊（みなと）大翔（ひろと）、女の子結月（ゆづき）結愛（ゆあ）結菜（ゆいな）だったそうですが、漢字に対しての読み方はいろいろあるそうです。〇子、〇美など往年の人気ネームからはかけ離れていますね。

知人と集まったとき、‘じゅんこ’が3人いた！なんてことがありましたが、年代が感じられますね。

そこでインドの子供につける名前について少し触れたいと思います。赤ちゃんの命名と宗教は深いつながりがあるそうで、例えば名前の後に付けられた姓が’Khan’ カーン‘ Ahmed’アーメド ‘ Mohammad’ モハマドの場合、それはイスラム教徒と関わりがあり‘Singh’サイ‘Maan’マン‘Gill’ジルの場合それはシーク教と関わりがあるそう。

また宗教色が強い名前のほかに出身地や職業、父の名前を中間に入れる、あるいは属しているカーストがわかるような名前も多く存在し、名前の付け方の一般的なルールやパターンには州によっても違いがあるそうです。

しかし近代社会になって、従来の名づけのルールに縛られない命名をする流れも増えてきているとか。

With so many people, it seems like an upheaval task to name them in exactly same manner, or following same set of rules for every new child born in the country. 

  But thanks to the diverse cultural and religious background of Indians, the task is simplified which forms the basis of naming a new born baby.

First and foremost, there are various religions who have standard pattern of naming people in that specific religious groups. If we concentrate on the surname or the family name of people, we will be able to find out the religious group from which she/he belongs. For example, if family name attached after given name is ‘Khan’ or ‘Ahmed’ or name attached before given name is ‘Mohammad’, then the person is from Muslim Community.

In the same way, if ‘Singh’ or ‘Maan’ or ‘Gill’ is attached after given name, the person is from Sikh community. 

Religion is further divided into sub-religions and has family name as per that sub-religion.

For example, Hindu, being the father of many sub-religious groups has a variety of family names attached, like—

Agrawal

Bhardwaj 

Chatterjee 

Chaturvedi 

Saxena, 

etc...

It’s a long list, having regional impact as a deciding factor as well.

As for the first name of the Indian people, naming people in South (Tamil Nadu) is different from North. 

In South, father’s name is attached as family name for naming babies.
